A VISIT TO A COCOA FARM IN PUNTA CANA DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Photos by D.Marquis
When I visit The Dominican Republic I enjoy many things this beautiful Country has to offer- but there a a few things that I always make sure I return with: Dominican Coffee, Coconut Oil,and some Dominican Chocolate.
All cacao in Dominican Republic is shade-grown, under the leaves of citrus, banana and avocado trees. Almost 10% of the forested area in the country is planted with cacao trees. 60% of the national production comes from the Northeastern region, especially around San Francisco de Macoris. -Cacaoteca.com
I'd never known that this intriguing plant / seed goes through quite a process to become some of the things we enjoy like chocolate.
When you visit The DR, I highly recommend doing a Dune Buggy excursion to gain easy access to the Cocao Farms as most of these tours make stops at here so that visitors can purchase items made from Cocao (make sure you negotiate the final price.)
During your farm visit you'll get a brief education on how this plant is harvested and you'll be able to sample Hot Chocolate and Tea made from Cacao as well as Dominican Coffee- also grown on the plantation. Let me tell you- all have a phenomenal taste.
Chocolate is a way of life here, and as you can see, the people here take great pride in sharing the cultivation of one of their top exports from their beloved country. You can also purchase Coconut Oil, Freshly made Flavorful Cigars, and Mamajuana (a specially prepared Alcoholic Beverage consisting of Rum and Honey with Natural Roots and Herbs as the base)
